Draw this again Seth by Hapuriainen Draw this again Seth by Hapuriainen
I've had this project where I try to draw something every day. It started on Nov 13, 2010, and now I think I'll make it a habit to draw the same thing on the anniversary to see where this is going. It's a real shame I picked such a boring pose though, there's not much I can do with that. Why couldn't I at least draw the hands!? This year I really considered to change the pose a bit to make the hands visible, but it just wouldn't be the same.

Kind of dissatisfied with the newest one, should have eyedropped the colours from the 2011 pic (but that was against the rules). At least it's improved from the 2010 one...

Character: Seth Nightroad from Trinity Blood

I love how you draw manga Seth and not anime Seth. And in her most pimped out dress. :D

Strangely enough, everything improved in your most recent one but your proportions (I'm talkin' shoulder and arm width) which seem better in 2011.

Oddly enough, the 2010 one is my favorite. You have improved tremendously but the 2011 and 2012 pictures are lacking personality. The shading and proportions have gotten much better, but the face sems too chubby, too blank. If you could have the face of the 2010 picture, with the body of 2012, that would be one amazing drawing.

This may seem weird, but the 2010 version is actually my favorite. Yes, you've made vast improvements in coloring and shading, but in both 2011 and 2012 you seem to have lost something in Seth's face. In 2010, she looks bright and alive, for lack of a better description. In 2011 and 2012, her expression is blank, which makes her look lifeless. If shown to me in different contexts (and without the outfit), I might not even believe that they are the same person. The placement and proportion of Seth's facial features are also much better in 2010.
Then again, I know nothing of Seth's personality; if the more "blank" expression suits her better, then the change is probably justified. However, the 2010 version is, to me, the most visually interesting.

I think you've gotten a lot better at your coloring and shading, and the outfits. but i think the head on the 2012 is a bit too big and the face looks distorted. But definitely some improvements!

wow you have grown! and I think the color is fine even if you didnt eyedrop. Its a bit lighter in the lime green and darker on the dark green but the gold and red came out nice. Skin colors a bit darker then the previous two but still not bad. You can see the gold on the hem of the shorts now!

Simply from a polite, constructively critical stand point. I've noticed that you rarely if ever show your figures in a setting actually doing anything.Even when you place do place them in a setting it usually looks like theyre just posing for photoshoot they simply stand there as if at a beauty pagent. maybe you need to explore a new level of adding a story and more dynamic action Stances. try taking influences from real life figures and look at what other artists are doing. It does wonders for skill to draw from real life and then apply those lessons back to your own art and build up a large collection of photos and books on artists you appreciate to learn lessons from them and apply their knowledge back to your own work. Look everywhere for new ideas and inspirations. A good artist has many many teachers through their life.

This is actually a problem I've known for a long time, but I can't really be bothered to do anything about it for now (From the afterword of the 2010-2011 drawing project exactly one year ago: "Then the main problem: I'm very unwilling to step out of my comfort zone and practise drawing something I can't draw. Like... Males. Poses more than just standing. Folds. Two or more characters. Perspective. Backgrounds").

As much as I'd like to be able to draw "proper" pictures well it really just isn't too high on my priority list for the moment (This year I can count... uh, a whooping one picture that had a real model for reference). It is my plan to practise drawing with a real life reference a lot more but currently most of my interest is towards dress ups and designing random clothes which both require a pretty static pose in my ideals. So there is next to no inborn interest towards other stuff, and trying to force myself to draw something when I have no motivation wouldn't have any good results.

I understand that feeling i once drew prehistoric life and dinosaurs and thats it, nothing else. not even fleeting thought of breaking out of that shell. but doing so has openned a whole new world to me and helped me with alot of problems in my art and is still helping me with other problems. The world of art is vast and worth investigating

I almost have the opposite problem. It just feels weird for me to draw a picture of a character and not draw a pose that conveys a bit of her personality

The first one seems "ALIVE", you seem to have lost that effect. The pose on the first one is much better too, in the others her feet seem non existent or like stumps.
your colouring has improved though.

I think its a combination of the way her eyes are positioned in relation to her eyebrows, making her look happy, and the way she's standing, making her look relaxed and more real. the others look like shes posing for the picture.

Constructive Criticism:
I really think you have improved, but the eyes on the most recent are too big. Also the first one seem to have a better kinda style. The style seems really original and really nice. Your colouring is getting amazing though, keep up the work.

Actually, I really like the clothes and the colours on the last one, but something about the eyes on the second one seem more like seth? I'm not quite sure how to explain it. I think it might be the lighter, more green colour, whereas the newer eyes are dominated by black. The other thing I noticed is that her hair gets less messy each year. While that's okay, I always remember Seth as having this slightly flippy, messy hair.

Overall though, it's a huge improvement, and almost everything seems to be getting better, including the anatomy.
